New DECKEE Data Reports Unlock Groundbreaking Insights Into Boating Activity Worldwide

DECKEE, the award-winning free mobile app that helps boaters stay safe and informed on the water, has announced DECKEE Data, an unprecedented new service offering insights and analysis of privacy-approved, anonymised boating activity and trends across global waterways.

The service empowers government agencies, consultants, boating companies and researchers to understand waterway activity in local communities and make more informed decisions that lead to economic, safety and environmental outcomes.

DECKEE Data leverages the activity uploads of DECKEE members worldwide, anonymized and aggregated to protect privacy, to bring the process of gathering boating activity insights into the modern age. With thousands of new GPS-tracked activities added every month, DECKEE’s data set of billions of GPS points offers an entirely new way of understanding and analysing boating patterns at a local level.

“Our mission at DECKEE is to help the boating community worldwide stay safe, informed and enjoy their time on the water,” said Mike McKiernan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at DECKEE. “DECKEE Data delivers an innovative way for us to serve DECKEE members and non‐members alike by empowering waterway stakeholders with actionable insights that foster smoother, safer and more convenient boating activities for everyone.”

In recent years, DECKEE has attracted a global network of government and industry partners, such as the Western Australian Government, Transport for NSW, Marine and Safety Tasmania, and the National Safe Boating Council of the USA.

“Before DECKEE Data, getting actionable insights of this scale and accuracy simply was not possible,” said Mr McKiernan. “The current alternatives are physical surveys conducted at local boating facilities, online questionnaires, and in some cases, personnel standing on the shoreline with binoculars to observe and record activity manually throughout the day.”

“For government agencies tasked with ensuring the safety and optimisation of the waterways, it is a bit like working with a search engine limited to a few queries per year.”

DECKEE Data also serves as a hub of research and development for the company, with work now underway to explore the application of artificial intelligence technologies to unlock predictive and preventative insights and recommendations for waterway stakeholders.

DECKEE Data is available now to industry stakeholders, marine advocacy groups, consultants and researchers. The boating community can also freely access heat map visualisations of the data in the DECKEE mobile app to assist with community powered route guidance.
