MOTORBOAT SAFETY 101
Boating is a fun activity that most people can access and enjoy. If you are just starting your boating journey, there are precautions and rules that you should know.
These tips ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience on the water and reduce the risk of dangerous situations. The basics of riding or operating a boat are covered in this article.
FOLLOW SAFETY ADVICE
Make sure you are familiar with boating navigation and are comfortable with the vessel you are operating. It is a good idea to take a boating course and receive a boat license. This is useful for understanding the “road rules” of the water, including identifying aids to navigation and safety signs.
HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT ON BOARD
Depending on the size of the boat and the regulations in your area, it is required by law to carry certain safety equipment for passengers and crew. Essential items include life jackets for everyone on board, fire extinguishers, flares and other distress signals, along with sound devices and a first aid kit. While your mobile phone can be a great tool for communication and navigation, service is not reliable out on the water so consider equipping your vessel with a VHF Marine Radio.
PLAN AHEAD
Create a plan for your boating trip by creating a boating checklist. Consider how long you will be gone, the weather conditions, the experience level of those on board and the equipment you need for a fun day out on the water. Let someone know when and where you will be when you are out on the water, and check in with the proper authorities in your area to make them aware of your location. You can easily log your trip on the Deckee app to track your speed, distance and direction while you are boating, and save the trip for later so you can share it with family and friends, and visit that spot again.
CHECK THE WEATHER
Look up the marine forecast ahead of time, and remember that conditions can change quickly. Make sure your boat is equipped to handle the conditions by checking tides and swell on the Deckee app. Know how you can get back home safely in case the weather becomes dangerous. If you are unsure for whatever reason, it is best not to go out at all.
USE COMMON SENSE
When out on the water, follow the rules and be respectful of other boaters around you. Operate at a safe speed, stay alert and slow down for big waves. Importantly, avoid alcohol while operating your boat, as it impairs reaction time and decision making.
If you are just starting out, plan short trips to help build your confidence, then ease into longer expeditions once you know what is required.
HAVE FUN
Enjoy yourself out on the water, and embrace the boating lifestyle. Fellow boaters are always happy to help out if you are courteous and follow boating etiquette. Boating is best enjoyed with friends and family, so get everyone involved.
Even if you are an experienced boater, it’s always a good idea to refresh yourself on the boating safety rules and equipment before heading out. Hopefully, this list can inspire you to get out on the water and enjoy boating.
