Innovative Incident Reporting for the Waterway Arrives in Tasmania

Monday 21 August 2023 – Tasmanian skippers are being encouraged to use the free DECKEE boating app to report problems on the water to improve safety and protect the aquatic environment.

Users of the app are now able to share information about incidents and hazards on the water in real time, allowing government agencies to immediately respond.

DECKEE has partnered with Marine and Safety Tasmania, The Environmental Protection Authority, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment on the innovative crowdsourcing solution.

The unique multi-agency initiative will further boost public safety and waterway sustainability and originates from Marine and Safety Tasmania’s (MAST) existing partnership with DECKEE. The app is already endorsed and recommended as the official boating app in Tasmania by MAST, which has resulted in more than 33,000 waterway users already getting on board in the state.

DECKEE Chief Executive Officer, Mike McKiernan, said that when an issue or incident arises on the water, it is often hard for government agencies to receive accurate and timely information to aid the response effort.

“DECKEE Crowdsourced Incident Reporting capability equips the boating community with a quick and easy way to provide agencies with real-time information that could save lives or mitigate environmental damage.”

Mr McKiernan said the new feature would allow all waterway users who have the free app to alert the participating agencies to issues on the water including potential dangers.

“The latest addition of incident reporting functionality complements the huge amount of Tasmania specific safety information already available on the free DECKEE app.”

DECKEE is a mission-driven technology company using data, innovative problem solving and a cooperative industry approach to drive measurable behavioural change that creates significant public safety, economic and environmental outcomes.

The DECKEE app is available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store
