BOATING APP DECKEE LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE NEW SAFETY FEATURE WITH DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT

4 March, 2022: Australian-born boating app, Deckee, has unveiled a new initiative that will modernise the way that WA boaters receive crucial maritime safety information and alerts to keep them safe and informed on the water.

The Deckee app, in partnership with the Department of Transport in Western Australia, now delivers geofenced Temporary Notices to Mariners (TNTMs) to users across the state in real-time, based on the GPS location of their device. The service is simple to use and provides a huge amount of official safety information free of charge.

Temporary Notices to mariners in Western Australia encompass updates such as navigational information considered important to safe navigation, warnings about marine hazards, and notices about approved aquatic events.

Tragically, WA is currently averaging six boating-related deaths per year, meaning the safety of local boaters has never been greater. What’s more, there are approximately 100,000 registered recreational vessels in WA and more than 280,000 Recreational Skipper’s Ticket holders - that’s a huge number of potential boaters that will benefit from the new initiative.

Deckee’s Chief Product Officer, Eugenie Alder, said “These new capabilities are an exciting and innovative development for maritime safety in Western Australia. We are now able to provide this essential information to the public in an interactive, engaging format which will contribute toward minimising accidents and fatalities on Western Australia’s waterways.”

“We are passionate about delivering innovative safety technology to the waterways, and we are proud to be furthering our partnership with the Department of Transport to make it happen.”

“The covid pandemic has created a surge in interest and activity on the water as people look to spend more time outdoors, so it’s vital that everyone is equipped with the right tools and information to plan and enjoy their time on the water and return home safely.”

The new Temporary Notices to Mariners capabilities adds to a comprehensive list of features already available to boaters in the free Deckee app, such as activity logging tools, weather forecasts, points of interest, aids to navigation, speed zones, boat ramps and more.
