DECKEE APP TO HELP TASMANIAN BOATERS HAVE SAFER EXPERIENCES ON THE WATER

A free new app which offers boaters a fresh way to explore the waterways safely is already making a splash in the state thanks to a partnership with Marine and Safety Tasmania.

Deckee, the community-powered boating app co-founded by solo round-the-world sailor Jessica Watson, has been downloaded more than 4000 times in Tasmania since it was launched over the Easter weekend.

MAST recreational boating and facilities general manager Peter Hopkins yesterday described the app as a “one stop shop” for boaters.

“Whether you want to plan your next trip on the water, check the weather forecast, share reports and recommendations or see where our 5 knot speed limit zones are, Deckee has you covered,” he said.

“It also includes information about public mooring locations, anchorages and boat ramps.

“There’s some significant safety outcomes and, with more boaters visiting from the mainland these days, we think it will be a great tool for interstate visitors looking for local information.”

Mr Hopkins said there was currently more than 31,000 registered boats in Tasmania.

The Deckee app was launched in New South Wales in 2018 and it is hoped all Australian states will jump on board in the near future to create a nationwide boaters network.

Watson said the app was packed with features which would benefit all marine pursuits, including cruising, fishing, sailing and pleasure boating.

“With the launch of our mobile app in Tasmania — one of Australia’s most incredible boating environments — we are proud to make a continued commitment to helping even more boaters in a variety of ways,” Watson said.
