San Remo is a super-friendly place, up a tricky entrance.

Reviewed Nov 2017
I wasn't heading for San Remo but the weather had other ideas. I was planning to get to Apollo Bay from Refuge Cove in mid-winter 2017 on a solo delivery cruise. The freezing wind helped me decide to stop at San Remo instead.

From the outset I had help. Coast Guard and locals gave me the advice I needed to be confident to round Cape Woolamai in the dead of night and into an outgoing tide. Cleeland Bight is a good, safe anchorage half way up the channel to San Remo and a worthwhile stop off in the dark.

Given that it was mid winter I had no trouble getting permission to come up into San Remo proper and tie up at the floating dock, which is a stop-and-fill space during warmer months. Asking permission beforehand is definitely the way to go. Lots of people in the town helped make my stay enjoyable despite the weather that threw rain, sleet and hail down on me. The co-op sells fantastic food and is a great place to thaw out.
The town has everything and is super-friendly
The Co-op and the health food shop!
The tides are very strong, making manouvering a challenge

New Year 2018. Whilst awaiting a wind change , decided to spend New Year's at Cape Wollami. Good anchorage just off of the "Big Dune Slide ". Can't miss it , just inside the 'red '. Gusted 35 knots Westerly , but still very passable. Bit of a swell at change of tide.

After 3 days , were able to go ashore. Terrific walks on good tracks by the Environment people. Maps- just at the walk start, to rhs of " Big Dune Slide ". Dingy to San Remo ,( need a good dingy from the noted anchorage ). Magic wharf with facilities close by - Aldi , grog , fish and chips !!
protected, interesting ashore
Good internet , of course , being so close to MBE.

Cruising Victoria's Western Port

Antony Baxter

In terms of destinations there are a number of places to tie up for a night or two, in particular San Remo on the eastern side of the bay and two smaller facilities at Cowes and Rhyll, on Phillip Island. There are two all-weather harbours suitable for keelboats looking for longer stays, being Western Port (Hastings) and Yaringa, both of them on the western side of the bay. Hastings is a commercial marina catering to motor and sail and the facilities are a little tired. Useful in terms of proximity to the town of Hastings and to Melbourne itself via public transport, but unprepossessing. By contrast Yaringa Boat Harbour, 10 nautical miles to the north of Hastings, is a delight.
