A performance-optimised cruiser-racer with X factor

The boat steered and manoeuvred well under power and clipped along at 6 to 7kts without much noise or vibration. There's an engine upgrade to 30hp available, but you'd need it only for extended cruising.

Some barber-hauling, outhauling and backstay tensioning soon saw the No.2 headsail and main working in harmony as we tacked our way to Middle Head. From there, we took off on a broad reach, before squaring away and setting the spinnaker. We gybed the kite at Shark Island and ran it shy for a few hundred metres, until the breeze went aft once more, allowing us to run square to the Harbour Bridge...

It exhibits all the hallmarks you’d expect of a contemporary IRC design

The well thought-out deck layout has been conceived as far as possible to combine desirable attributes for both cruising and racing purposes and largely does so without unduly compromising either function. With the optional Race Pack specified the layout of deck gear broadly follows the X-35’s successful and well-proven layout. This pack is intended to enable the boat to be raced straight out of the box and includes Spectra running rigging, as well as additional controls. For instance, cunningham and vang are led to both sides of the boat, allowing them to be adjusted from the rail, there are inhaulers for the headsail sheets, and there’s a full set of spinnaker gear, including an aluminium pole, or option of carbon...
