Great alternative RIB
Reviewed Sep 2016
The Walker Bay is a refreshingly different take on the RIB concept. Instead of a tiny alloy hull stabilised by large inflatable tubes, it is a real boat on which the inflatable collar offers extra flotation and stability. For anyone not looking for a fast planing dinghy, the WB has an easily-driven hull shape which can be rowed or powered by a small outboard.
Available in 8' or 10', you also have a choice of hypalon or PVC (or no) collar, and the option of a sailing rig. The tough injection-moulded polypropylene hull is virtually indestructible and won't corrode.
We found the ten footer stable and roomy enough for a small family or 2 adults and our 3 dogs. It has eye nuts to take davit bridles, and is not too heavy to hoist aboard. The 2.3hp Mercury we used was ample power, however the standard oars were about a foot too short for enjoyable rowing. We also thought the plastic oar blades vulnerable to damage.
Stability is excellent, even for a not-to-agile user, so we thought the Walker Bay an excellent compromise for usability, stability, durability and price.
